NEWS FLASH Adventures in the South Pacific

IMG_1177

(Best if you read this and think of an old time radio or tv news show or the guy from "Lifestyles of the rich and famous")

Meet young Eric, our brave south seas explorer! World wide traveller of far off exotics, frisbee extroidinar! Where will he go this time? Historic and ancient Egypt for a camel jaunt around the pyramids? Exotic Buenos Aires for a jig on the town? Cold and heartless, the U.S.S.R.? But no, our young dreamer will brave the south Pacific, New Zealand town! Stupendous! Now say goodbye to mum!

We catch up to our adventurer four days and five planes later in the gardens of the garden city, christchurch New Zealand. Hungry and tired, our friend searches for reliable food, ah the local vendor with his kebabs. Delicious. But no time to digest for a date with destiny awaits in south canterbury! How will he get there. Surely local transport will fail to bring him to such a remote location. No, he will have to rely on the kindness of those lucky enough to own...the automobile! With a flick of the thumb he attempts to signal the passerby of his folly. One automobile past. Better luck next time old friend. Two automobiles past. He must be getting nervous now. Here comes the third, she is slowing down and yes, brilliant, someone has come to our friends aid. Three cheers to the elderly woman.

Enter Nath and Steph, young, energetic kiwi couple. Farmers of five years here at Treehugger's in south Canturbury. Forced to work the land by hand without the help of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. And how! Surely neighboring superfarms will dwarf and weed out young treehuggers. Our young couple will have to fend for themselves, eating off the plot in a self sustaining way. And how! How aweful is the plight of our primitive friends. But wait here comes our hero along with four other willing organic workers to fight for our young couple! Three cheers to wwoofers.

Yes, work is hard! As the hand turns around the clock so does our greenthumbed friends in the organically certified soil, surely this pace will break the backs of many. Enter homebrew and chilled cider to the rescue! Our friends have done it again! Refreshed, they finish out the daylight hours just in time for dinner. Are the cupboards barren, open up a can of beans shall we? Never! says our hosts. And with fellow worker and full time chef Aaron on board, those mounds of veggies and herbs will come out delightful. What's that? Jeremy has caught a grande rainbow trout from the river. Throw it on the barbi with the chickens that are being butchered and marinated. What about dessert old friends, pudding? Not so, for the Frenchman Jean Pierre has a recipe for apple crumble. Well, at least we'll eat better those apples before the birds do. Can you say leftovers? Fabulous!

Till next time when our young explorer braves the Abel Tasman Coastal Track without the use of a sleeping bag or tent. And how!

Bout that time...

Things are coming together for my trip, and someday soon it will hit me that I am fulfilling a life long dream to go to New Zealand. I am hoping this will be a time of refreshing inspiration in all parts of my being. I plan to stay close to the land, live with it, use it, eat from it, let it harden my body as i track across it and work in it's soil. I pray that I meet the greatests of people to share life with along the way. This is why I travel.

This past month myself and Kristen were heading to Indian Creek near Moab for some epic trad climbing. We stopped in Mexican Hat for a greasy green chile burro and got to admiring a vintage moto with sidecar parked next to our car. As we placed our order I could not help myself but to ask the man in the speedracer track suit about his ride. It so happens that in this little greasehole I had found a BBC television series in the making. Mike and his new wife were trekking across the American continents (Alaska to the bottom of Argentina) in search of advice on how to make love work in their new found courtship. They had just spent several days with a polygamist family and were heading to Vegas to inquire the prostitutes and porn stars. Myself and Kristen spoke with them at length for nearly an hour while I greased my stomach with spicy green chile. We convinced them they need to find some natives to talk to as we were surrounded by various tribe's rez's. We managed to hook them up with some Hopi contacts which I was glad to see later they were able to get into a Hopi ceremony and interview an elderly Hopi couple. Check out the website if you get a chance.
